NLEC3 S Revolutionising Engineering Triumph l t “Silent Second” A gear that’s always in mesh, gives lightning acceleration, great braking power, makes gear changing a pleasure, and all without a sound. Safe .. . Silent .. . Sure and Simple. PIONEERS of the central gear change, Reo have again revolutionised the motor industry with its new silent second transmission. What a pick-up ! Steer this car into traffic. Nose right up behind a truck that’s dawdling along at 5 miles an hour. Want to go around him? Flick that gear lever into second. Touch the accelerator—and you’ll flash ahead of him in one meteoric swish. Reo’s new Silent Second Transmission gives you lightning-like acceleration where you need it. You can do things with this car in traffic that you can’t do with any other car under the sun! And when you’re held in traffic, at the first signal, “give her the gas”—and you’ll be up and away like a streak of light, leaving cars that were abreast of you a hundred feet behind! You’ll be hitting 40 before the others can reach 15! At speeds much higher than in ordinary cars you can flick that gear lever right from second to high without slowing down a tap—and without grinding, without clashing your gears ! It just slips into high with one quiet “ clipk ” at any speed! Just nose up behind traffic and go into second. You’ll have to crawl till the coast is clear. But at the first break you get—step on the gas! You’ll shoot around awfully fast! And when you start down a hill—a hill that drops off like a plummet— Reo’s new Second Gear will be a revelation to you! Ordinarily, you’ll slow down before taking a drop like that—you’d want to take it in second. But with the ordinary car it’s a lot of trouble to get into second. You have to slow down to 10 or 15 miles an hour to do it. So often you won’t bother, you’ll chance it in high—and perhaps ruin your brakes. But with the Reo Silent Second—when you’re ready, just flick that gear lever intct second —and you’ll go down that hill at a crawl, or as fast as you care to! You can choose your own speed! / Other Cars to follow Reo ~ \ €> In !h SILENT: Sound Vibrations Neutralised. \\h. Brown Lipc Gear Company were the successful bargainers. They have acquired selling rights to the Reo Silent Second Transmission, operative on and after January I. 1930. It is rumoured that many automobile manufacturers are bargaining with the Brown Lipe Gear Company in order that they may be the first next to Reo to instal the Reo Silent Second Transmission. Even parts buyers for several foreign makes of cars have visited the Reo Factory to inspect and test this transmission, with the view of installing it on their product—after January I. 1930. | / The new Reo Engine Cylinder Blocks are cast of Chrome nickel alloy iron, which has seven times the endurance of conventional close-grained iron. A remarkable new-type, low-expansion piston has also been introduced in the Reo, made of an aluminium alloy which is so tough that it cannot be scratched with a sapphire, the next hardest thing to a diamond. Naturally with such a low expansion rate, this piston can be fitted more closely, resulting in greater power and permanence of power, with seven times the wearing life of an ordinary engine.
