OWNER’S TRIBUTE FAITH IN McAULAY "I attribute the success of Nightni.arch very much to the great ability of his trainer, A. McAulay. He is a truly wonderful man with horses,” said Mr. A. Louisson, owner of the New Zealand champion, to “Vigilant,” the sporting scribe of the “Sun News Pictorial/' Melbourne, last month after Nigh t mar cli had done so well at Hand wick. “McAulay is til© best ma.n with horses that I know. You see, he began with It. J. Mason (Gloaming’s trainer), who, of course, was a master of his era f t. “Often I have said to McAulay, ‘Would you liko me to buy such and such a horse?’ and the reply has come, *1 would not train him.’ “You understand,” explained Mr. Louisson. “McAulay will not train ‘duds.* He gives so much personal attention to his horses that he cannot afford to waste time over indifferent performers. “lie works from daylight to dusk, and attends to everything that is important himself. "Why. we have only had Nightmarch about 15 months. I bought him privately in July, 1925. That was at the end of the? two-year-old year. I think he had then won one race, and dead-heated for first in another. It is difficult to recognise the Xightmareli of today with the horse 1 bought. McAulay's skill, with the addition of the training facilities afforded by Riccarton (Christchurch) have changed him out of all knowledge. “He was bred by Mr. George Ivain. one of the finest sportsmen in the Dominion. Mr. Kain owns the dam, Marsa. Mr. Kain’s property is at Gladstone i ark. at Oran, in the South Island. Racing is just a hobby with me,” he continued. "It does not pay owners to bet in New Zealand, where 40 per cent is taken out of the totalisator total before the winning dividend is declared. That 40 represents 15 per cent, for the Government and the horse’s "backer// f ° r the second ’ I had planned," added Mr. Louisson, a holiday trip to Australia, and ■* Nl Shtmarch was nominated for . our principal spring handicaps. When wo saw the weights the trip was nearly abandoned The horse received sev'■P.in OU Vi/i , m ° re , th ? n ,vo expected. But Mghtmarcli improved, and we decided to carry on. He has kept on s'vdNUl from the time he landed in htdnej. In that regard, lie has done a/ ,E° the rotations ot either -McAulay or myself.
