PLAZA
“WEARY RIVER” Richard Barthelmess's fine talking picture, "Weary River," has been so successful at the Plaza Theatre that it will be presented there for another week. In “Weary River,” Barthelmess not only talks, but plays the piano. A Vitaphone test proved his voice of excellent quality for talking pictures, which accounts for the unprecedented success for the initial Barthelmess talkie. “Weary River” is from the short story by Courtney Ryley Cooper, directed by Prank Lloyd. It relates the story of a convict who sings over the radio, wins a parole, becomes famous, and wins the love of a girl. It is a wide departure from anything Barthelmess has done heretofore, and offers him the sort of human characterisation in which he excels. The cast supporting Barthelmess is headed by Betty Compson, who recently played the feminine lead in Barthelmess’s “Scarlet Seas.” Others m the cast include William Holden, Raymond Turner, George Stone, Louis Natheaux, Robert O’Connor, and others. The items include a comedy-sketch by the Howard Brothers; a cartoon; several violin selections by Albert fepalding, world-famous violinist; and finally a new and interesting sound gazette.
