PLANE’S MOTOR FAILS
FORCED LANDING NEAR DANNEVIRKE BRUSHES THROUGH TREE-TOPS Pticss Association DANNEVIRKE, Today. While flying to Wellington early this morning to participate in the aerial pageant Lieutenant Allen, as-sistant-instructor to the Hawke’s Bay Aero Club, who had as passenger [ in his Moth plane Mr. N. F. Reed, of ! Havelock North, had to make a forced landing at Tiratu, on the outskirts of Dannevirke. The plane left Hastings at G. 20 a.m. and had a bumpy flight against a head wind. About seven o'clock, when over Tiratu, the petrol pipe leading to the carburettor burst and it became urgently necessary to descend. Lieutenant Allen circled round in I search of a landing place and safely ! descended in a paddock 12 chains in ! length on Mr. A. H. Pollock's farm near Tipapakuku factory. When landing the plane just grazed the top of a belt of trees and missed a wire fence. The plane is being brought to Dannevirke for repairs and will probably 1 remain there today. D. Mathews, at Mangahao about live miles from Pahiatua. A good landing- was effected and Captain White will resume his journey when the weather lifts. He was accompanied by Mrs. Richmond, a woman pilot of the Hawke's Bay Aero Club. Captain White resumed his flight shortly after 9 o'clock. He made a good take oft'.
