CHATEAU TONGARIRO
PROTEST AGAINST LICENCE BY PRESBYTERIANS ‘UNFAIR TO MAORI RACE” A resolution, protesting against the suggestion that a licence to sell liquor should be granted to the Chateau Tottgariro. was passed at a meeting of the Auckland Presbytery last evening. it was held that it would be a violation of the country's pledge to the Maori race, by which it is illegal to trade in liquor in the King Country, and that there is a strong body of opinion in the country against the granting of any further facilities for the sale of liquor, more especially at tourist and health resorts. The resolution was moved by the Rev. 1.. Tl. Hunt, acting upon a recommendation from the life and work committee, and it was decided that the protest be forwarded to the Prime Minister and the Minister in charge of tourist and health resorts. "If the people of New Zealand were awake to their responsibilities toward the Maori race, no licence would be granted." commented the Rev. W. J. ( omrie. It would mean breaking faith with the Maoris. The brewery at Otahuhn was bad enough, but a licence for Tongariro would be worse.
