“WEARY RIVER” In tlie successful talkie attraction at the Plaza Theatre this week. Richard Barth elm ess makes his first talkie appearance in Auckland in “Wearv River.” a dramatic production whic?i is being enthusiastically received. In his latest picture Mr. Bartbelmess has the part of a gangster who is arrested and imprisoned. While in prison he develops a taste for music and his singing at a prison concert quickly wins fame for him. After being released the ex-gangster obtain* a vaudeville engagement, but he is recognised as an ex-convict and has to retire from tlie stage. His final success is shown in a dramatic dimax. Betty* Comp son has the role of Alice his girl companion, in the old daye who sincerely tries to help him reform. William Holden is excellent as the warden of the prison, whose kindly help does much to ease tlie burden of prison life. The scenes of prison life do rot make up the whole of the picture. The beginning and the end embrace many spectacular and exciting scenes of I society life in New York, including * thrilling gangsters’ gun fight. The supporting programme will include shorter talkies of interest, including humour by the Howard Brothers, jazz selections from Henry \ Halstead and his famous band, two I violin solos by Albert Spalding, work I famous violinist, and finally a ParaI mount Sound Gazette.
