FLED FROM ROTO ROA
ESCAPEE CAUGHT AFTER SEVEN MONTHS Escaping from Roto Roa Inebriates’ Home seven months ago, Thomas Anderson Francis Hughes appeared at the Police Court this morning, having been arrested by Constable Hefferman only a few days ago. Hughes, aged 49, pleaded guilty to escaping from a reformative institution, and Sub-Inspector McCarthy asked for a remand, in order that he might investigate the details of the case. Staff-Captain Holmes, of the Salvation Army, said that Hughes was from Blenheim. He was a married man with seven children. It was doubtful which would be better, to recommit. the man to the island or to punish him in some other way. The sub-inspector said that the man had been working on a sheep station since the escape. He had left the island by getting hold of a boat, though how he had done it was not known. A remand was made until Wednesday. when Hughes will be sentenced.
