AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES POOR ATTENDANCE Only about 200 people attended the Town Hal! last evening when the New Zealand amateur wrestling championships were staged. Some bouts were good, but others were very poor. The wcigliing-in of the competitors and t u ■ u ng of th« draw caused delay, and it was nearly 7.30 before i the first contest was staged. 1 The boys were in their corners j awaiting the gong, when it was dis - 1 covered that the timekeeper and the i gong were among the missing. Mr. Val Dunne | and George Walker, heavy-weight | champion of Canada, refereed the contests. Results are as follow: CLASS UNDER Tst. C. Davis (6st 113 b) beat M. Elliott (6st .lib). —Davis took thc first fall in the second round with a lieadlock, and decision with another fall from a body press in the next. FINAL Davis won by default from Kisha Bana. who could not wrestle owing to injuries received in the bout against Potter m the heavier division. CLASS UNDER Sst. N. Potter (Tst 4Jib) beat Kisha Bana ; (6st. 911 b.). —The Indian -scored a fall in j the first term with a body scissors and arrnbar. Potter, who was making Ins I first ring appearance, evened the score I in tlie next with a body press and armt bar, and took the decision in the third I with a reverse headlock. ! c Maher (Tst 111 b), beat Ranch ood j Sukha (Tst 131 b). —Maher scored with a body press in the second round, but neither looked like getting a fall in the third. SEMI-FINAL 13. Skelton (Tst 61b) beat Potter.—The first round was good. In the second Potter scored with an arm scissors and armlock, Skelton evening the score in the third with a body press. In an extra round Skelton took the decision with another body press. FINAL Maher beat Skelton. —No fall was scored in three rounds and the decision went to Malier on points. CLASS UNDER 9st. A. Webb, ‘Sst 131 b, beat IL Brewer. Sst 111b.—Webb took the first fall in the second round with a reverse headlock. Tempers were badly frayed on both sides in the final round which ended with no fall being scored. L. Jellie, Sst IHlb, beat W. Williamson, Sst 13Mb. —Three rounds were “scrambled” through without either scoring a fall. An extra round was ordered, but no falL came and thc decision went to Jellie on points. SEMI-FINAL Webb beat C. Anderson, Sst BJib.—No fall had been scored after an extra round had been wrestled and the decision was given as a draw. Later another round was wrestled and a very close decision went to Webb. FINAL Webb beat Jellie. —Three rounds brought no fall and after an extra round the decision went to Webb on points. CLASS UNDER lOst 41b F. Clarke, 9st 3 3Jlb, beat R. Carter, lOst 3 Jib. —Clark took the first fall in the opening round with an arm lock and body press and the second fall and decision in the next with a headlock. R. Brooke, 9st 3 21b, beat L. Naylor, 9st 131 b.—ln the second session Breeke scored a doubtful fall with a headlock. During the interval Naylor stamped impatiently and at the gong rushed his opponent, but missed and could not score a fall. A. Newton, 9st 131 b (Hamilton), beat W. Paget, 9st 71b.—A double leg-hold gave Newton a fall in the initial session, and. there was no alteration in the next two rounds. It was a good contest, in ’ which Paget gave a good display against a clever opponent. SEMI-FINAL J. McComisli, 9st 13Jib, beat Newton. — After a good opening round McComish scored with a reverse armlock. No fall was scored in an excellent final round. Clark beat Breeke.—Clarke scored a fall with a body scissors and arm-stretch and another in tlie next round with a ham-mer-lock. FINAL Clark beat McComish.—Clark secured the first fall in the second round v.itfi a body press and took the decision in the last session with a headlock. CLASS UNDER list 41b E. Mackay, lOst 121 b, beat R. Carter, lOst 3 Jib. —Without any preliminaries Mackav rushed in and scored with a body press. After throwing Carter through the ropes twice in the second round the powerful Mackay took the decision with a double armlock. C. Woolston, list 21b (Pirongia), beat A. Cunningham, l.Ost 71b (Raetihi). —This was a fast and clever bout. There was no fall in the first term, but in the second Woolston scored with a body scissors and armlock. Cunningham had his opponent’s shoulders on the mat in the last session, but did not get a fall. J. Simpson, list 2111 b. beat L. Gibbs, list 3 fib (Hamilton). —A headlock gave Simpson a fall in the second round. No fall occurred in the first or last rounds. SEMI-FINAL Simpson beat Woolston. —Simpson scored the first fall in the final round with a body press. FINAL j Simpson beat Mackay.—This was an | excellent contest, being fast for heavy i men. In the third round Simpson scored 'the only fall with a body press and armbar. CLASS UNDER 12st 71b A. Anderson. 12st 41b (Raetihi). beat G. Stoddard, 12st 71b. —In the opening round Anderson scored with a body j press and armlock and another in the next with a double leghold. ' E. Johnston, list lb. beat A. Jackson, list 71b (Te Awamutu). —After two good rounds Johnston scored a fall with a body press in tlie final round. FINAL Anderson beat Johnston.—The first round was strenuous and in the second Anderson secured a fall with a headlock. Anderson put the decision beyond doubt in tin- next by scoring with a reverse headlock. I ALLEY BEATS JOHANSSON Press Association PALMERSTON N.. Monday. In a professional wrestling contest, the first staged by the newly- formed Palmerston North Wrestling Associa- . tion. Tom Alley (America) defeated j Walter Johansson (Finland) in the sixth round. Johansson had the j better of the first four rounds and obf tained the first fall, taking the next two falls and the decision. Johansson ! appeared dazed, and the last fall \va§ ; obtained with comparative ease. l
