NEW FERRY SERVICE
OPERATING THURSDAY FOR BIRKENHEAD IMPROVING ROAD SURFACES The new Rirkenhead-Xorthooto vehicular ferry service will be opened next Thursday morning at 11.15 o'clock. Tho landing stage for this service will be from near the end of Beaumont Street, on the Western reclamation. At present ferries for the above service are leaving from the wharf which serves Devonport. but this was only a temporary arrangement until the Western reclamation vehicular service was completed. On and after next Friday the scale of charges on the Birkenhead-Xortli-cote run will be altered to conform with those prevailing on the Devonport run. A new timetable will come into operation and more frequent trips will be made, but the Devonport Ferry Company has insisted that the 6.15 a.in. trip from Birkenhead shall go direct to Auckland. All other trips will include Xorthcote until 7 p.m. The best route to the new ferry from the City will be along Sturdee Street into Fanshawe Street, thence to Beaumont Street on the reclamation. From Ponsonby Road the best route will be either Franklin Road or College Hill. Wellesley Street West will also lead to the new ferry from Queen Street and Hobson Street. The City Council has started to improve the roads on the routes xo the ferry and will treat the streets on the Freeman’s Bay reclamation with bitumen. This work will not be completed until after the ferry landing has been opened.
