THE USEFUL LEMON
BENEFICIAL TO HEALTH AN AID TO BEAUTY Certainly the lemon’s usefulness is universally acclaimed. The bleaching properties of lemon juice are well known. Clothes are -whitened when rinsed in water to which a squeeze of lemon juice has been added; a cut lemon mixed with salt cleans discoloured copper. Glycerine and lemon juice also is an infallible cure for rough and red hands. The uses of the lemon are inexhaustible. It is also used extensively in cooking, being a delightful and safe flavouring for many dishes, and it has the additional advantage of being beneficial to the health. Equal parts of lemon juice and soda water give speedy relief in bilious attacks, and lemon juice and honey soothes the most obstinate cough. Half a glass of the juice (without sugar) taken every morning before breakfast will help to keep the blood pure, and will make the ej es blight and sparkling, though lemon juice has a thinning effect if taken too often. If the possessor of blonde locks wishes to keep her hair bright and fluffy, she should add a little lemon juice to the rinsing water after shampooing.
