HUGE TALKIE SET
The largest sound scene ever filmed has been staged by Sam Wood for the big special he is directing for Metro - Goldwyn-Mayer, “College Life.” Building a regular street several blocks long, asphalt paved and flanked by imposing buildings of permanent construction, the M.G.M. production department landscaped the gardens with trees, shrubs and flowers, planted real grass, and made the big setting life-like in every detail. Five hundred young men and women were engaged for the scene, in which Elliott Nugent, Robert Montgomery, Sally Starr. Cliff Edwards and Phyllis Crane played the leading parts. Eight microphones were secreted in tree branches to catch all of the dialogue and. street noise, the sound being recorded on portable equipment housed in a special truck laboratory buiilt for th 6 purpose.
