UMPIRES WANT A BREAK

RECENTLY the Wellington Cricket Association decided to play its championship matches without the break usually adopted for afternoon tea, and in the opening games of the season this method has been adhered to. At this week’s meeting of the Association, however, a letter was received from the Umpires’ Association, stating that it was the intention of its members to leave the grounds at 4 o’clock for a quarter of an hour’s adjournment. Needless to say, the letter provoked considerable discussion, as it was thought that the umpires were exceeding their powers. Some of the members of the association also objected to the tone of the letter. A motion was carried that the association intended to adhere to. its rule in regard to the matter and the games must proceed without a break, but the association, will be prepared to meet the umpires and discuss the matter with them. There the subject now rests, and the next move rests with the umpires.
