Historic Race
THE NEW ZEALAND CUP Topweights Versus Lightweights WITH an excellent programme scheduled for tomorrow, thg opening of the New Zealand Cup carnival at Ricearton promises to be a wonderful success. There will be racing tomorrow, Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, and trotting Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. “Early Bird’s” review of the prospects for the fine programme to be staged tomorrow is appended.
Of course the time-honoured race, the New Zealand Cup, is the outstanding event of the seven days’ carnival. This is to be run tomorrow, together with the Welcome Stakes and the Stewards’ Handicap. The smallest field of the day will be the two-year-old classic, which really represents modest class, and it looks as if the Canterbury Jockey Club will have to increase the stake for this race. A fine lot of handicap horses remain in the New Zealand Cup. which promises to be a battle between the .lightly-weighted Chide and some of those higher up the list, notably Historic, Concentrate, In the Shade and Prodice. In the latter pair the Auckland province appears to have a couple of excellent representatives. First item to set the carnival off is the Spring Hurdles The top weight does not win out of his turn, but he is a good one when right. That Glengariff should be taken j south may be taken as an indication | that he is very well. Aberfeldy is a good one, and so, too, is Carinthia, who j is nicely treated. Novar is unreliable, and Tresham, if he can negotiate the | difficult obstacles, will go well. Kapuna 1 will stay the journey, and Nine of ' Spades, Pangolin and Rangiawhio are likely light-weights. Small field that it is it is not going to be easy to win. Perhaps the fancies will be CARINTHIA TRESHAM Spring Plate This is one of the real puzzles that few people will be able to solve to their financial satisfaction. There are several good hacks engaged, and with a field of 27 the luck of the running is going to play an important part. The favourites may be TAURUA KING’S JEST Linwood Handicap Here is another very big field. North and South Island hacks are strongly represented, and it is difficult to know what will be the actual favourite. How- , ever, two that will not lack support are VALI MISS NIGH TRAIL) New Zealand Cup So much has already been written and said about this race that there is little new to record. Historic will be set a task that has yet to be accomplished, to win with 9.5. The previous ! biggest weight carried to victory was Count Cavour’s 8.13 in a moderate field; the next best is 8.9. Historic rail a wonderful race last Saturday, and with all his weight it will be surprising to find him out of a place. Concentrate is next, but 151 b below the topweight. He is a good one, and his fourth in the Metropolitan was suggestive of ability to account for a New Zealand Cup. Count Cavour is lightly weighted, but he must almost rank as a has-been, although a win for him would be most popular. Seatown ran good races at Trentham, and in his case stamina may tell one way or the other. Yoma is not fancied unless rain falls to make the course heavy. Hoylake is a regular morning glory—he does his best in the early morning on the track. Apart from this weakness he is good enough if in the mood. Piutliair is a good stayer, and Prodice comes in very light. If the Te Awamutu mare can stay she should be one of the hard ones to beat. Chide has done everything asked of him. The one thing that might be called into question is, has his trainer managed to keep him up to his top form since he won so easily at Wingatui five weeks back? On the figures, Chide seems a second to none chance. In the Shade appears to be a possibility over a journey, for he always does best over the last bit. He won at Trentham, and obviously he is back to his best. In the Shade can have a tick placed against his name. Money Mine lias not raced up to bis best of late, and Amor, a light-weight possibility, has had an interrupted preparation. Jaleux impresses as a possibility, for he is an improving three-year-old. Black Mint is not liked, but Tcheka was doing well in the W.R.C. Handicap recently, finishing fourth, just in front of Star Stranger. The field is completed by Spearmiss, a mare who may easily prove to be the elect of the last half dozen, for she sticks on impressively.
It is a good field, and although Chide appears to stand out, there are several aspects to be considered before the stake can be handed over to his owner. At this end the three most liked are CONCENTRATE CHIDE IN THE SHADE Welcome Stakes This is a very poor field, with all the cracks absent. Tray Bond is fast, but is devoid of stamina, and four furlongs seems as far as she can go. Praise is backward, but the same stable won this race last year with Honour, when the colt was as big as a bullock. Praise is very well bred, and she may be good enough in her present condition. Spoon ran two seconds at Wingatui to Satisfy and Kerbside, so she is pretty smart Red Royal has done nothing yet, but King Musket is highly thought of. Princess Betty is a winner, but not an impressive one. However, the opposition does not look over-strong. Best backed may be: SPOON j> PRAISE Apprentices’ Handicap One would want to learn who the riders are before having some knowledge as to who the apprentice riders are. There are some smart hacks engaged, and with the proper assistance they should put up a good race. Two that ar© held in mind are: IMATEAGIRL COUNT PALATINE Stewards’ Handicap With a field of anything up to a couple of dozen in the sprint the troubles of backers are not yet at an end. Paganelli will go well, but lie has a big weight, although he has only 31b. more than he won with at Trentham. Cimabue is back to his best, and Red Heckle has had a recurrence of his kidney trouble. He may go a good race if right. Arrow Lad is well forward, and some improvement on Trentham running is expected in his case. Consent has been something of a disappointment, despite a win at Wanganui, and Goshawk is said to be not ready.
Goblin Market is speedy, and Havering may be one of the best in the middle of the weights. He won easily at Ellerslie last month. White Fang is galloping well, and a repetition of Avondale running will make him dangerous. Hunting Cry may want a longer journey, but Great Star, the favourite, is a real speed merchant who has won under big imposts. Gold Cure may not find it far enough, and of those on the other half of the handicap a fancy is expressed for Keddar, Meadow Lark, Freehold, Leader, Gold Tinge, Speed Light, Subdivision, Waving Corn, Dutch Money and Caterpillar. It is a very difficult race, with backers perhaps preferring. GREAT STAR WHITE FANG PAGANELLI Ricearton Handicap The concluding nine furlongs event has attracted a handy-sized field of ten, including the Derby candidates Meprisant and Admiral Drake, the latter of whom was unlucky at Trentham. Meprisant is a good one, and as he reads as a dangerous candidate for the blue ribbon, he may win here. Of the older horses, Black Duke and Taboo will be more dangerous on a soft track. Merry Mint’s Auckland form was impressive, and Atholspear is better than thought. It may be a duel for favouritism between: MERRY MINT MEPRISANT

Tea Miss Backers had much the better of the battle with the bookmakers at Moorefield last Saturday week, and their judgment was particularly good in the divisions of the Three and Four Years Old Handicap. In the second division the Randwiek trainer, M. Poison, saddled up a very warm favourite in the ' ex-New Zealander Tea Miss, and the early demand for her enabled a good price to be procured about Brock way, owned by Colonel T. L. F. Rutlege, a member of the A.J.C. committee. Brockway won almost as he liked, whereas Tea Miss gave a poor run for the money invested on her, and she was only in third place, four lengths behind the winner, at the finish.
