When is a Maori Not a Maori ?
A RUGBY PUZZLE ADVISORY BOARD TO DECIDE (Special to THE SUN) WELLINGTON, Thursday. When is a Maori not a Maori? was a question which troubled the Management Committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union at this week’s meeting Jn Wellington. Mr. T. A. Fletcher Tiioved that the recent ruling fixing the definition of a Maori Rugby player as not more than half-caste be rescinded, and this opened up a great deal of discussion. It was generally conceded" that the tendency in the South Island was for the Maori blood to disappear, but such was not the case in the North Island. Finally Mr. Fletcher’s motion was carried. Then Mr. Kingi Tahiwi, who holds a seat on the Management Committee by virtue of his position as secretary of the Maori Advisory Board, took a voice in the discussion. He said he would like to see the union have a little more confidence in the Maori Advisory Board, besides which the definition \yhich the union had recently laid down had caused a great deal of trouble. After further discussion it was decided to leave the question to the Maori Advisory Board to decide in the meantime.
