LIFE OF CONCRETE ROADS

SHORE RATEPAYERS CONCERNED The North Devonport Ratepayer. 4 -' Association has become concerned about the deterioration of the concrete roads at Devonport, mostly apparent in the appearance of big cracks across the concrete ribbon at many places, and the wearing away of the shoulders of the road. The association has written the Devonport Borough Council, pointing out the occurrence of these cracks and' asking if the very heavy loads, mentioned as 15 tons in some instances, that were taken over the roads, were contributing factors. Another suggestion was that possibly water had eaten away the subgrade foundation. Mr. E. Aldridge, Mayor, said that the association had opened up a big question. He referred to the engineer, Mr. A. T. Griffiths, one question which was asked, “What is the life of a concrete road.” Mr. Aldridge said he thought it would be the lif«of the loan, 36 years. The engineer said the life would be determined solely by the density of traffic. The roads in the City could not be e* - pected to last as long as those in places where*traffic was less, and probably would not last out the loans. Tie did not think that loads were excessive, for most of the heavy traffic was limited to about 10 tons. The subject is to be reported on
