NEED FOR FUNDS URGED
AUCKLAND SAILORS’ HOME It was decided at the monthly meeting of the council of the Auckland Sailors’ Home last evening to apply to the Town Clerk for permission to participate, along with kindred bodies, in one of the four annual street collections. A suggestion was made that the British Sailors’ Society, the Mission to Seamen and the Navy League might co-operate with them in a joint effort. An application for a grant was made to the King George Fund for Sailors, which distributes more than £50,000 yearly among societies and institutions for the relief of distressed seamen, and of widows and families. The chairman pointed out that, while a great deal had been done with the £3,000 given by the Auckland Savings Bank, there was need of more funds to repair the buildings, and to give help to the indigent. Mr. P. A. Edmiston was elected a life member. A letter received from a sea captain expressed appreciation of the comfort and cleanliness of the home, and complimented those in charge on the great improvements which had been carried out since liis last visit. The monthly balance sheet showed a specially satisfactory position.
