HIGH TRANSPORT COST

TAKAPUNA BOROUGH SEEKS CONFERENCE “RESIDENTS TURNED AWAY” The cost of transport, more particularly as it affects the Milford end of the borough, was debated by the Takapuna Borough Council last evening. The question was introduced by Cr. J. who urged that the timo was opportune to come to an understanding with the North Shore Transport Co., Ltd., whose services cover the borough. Comparative costs of btxs services in and around Auckland were quoted by Cr. L. H. Titchener. He contended thau the Milford end of the borough was unduly penalised by the present tariff, which not only had caused some people to leave the borough, but had prevented many others from becoming residents. The council resolved to invite the management of the Transport Company to a conference upon the subject ol charges. The coumcil representatives will be the Mayor, Mr. J. W. Williamson, and Crs. Titchener and J. F. Colegrove. Advice was received that no provision could be made this session of Parliament for the proposed purchase of Smith’s Bush under the Scenery Preservation Act.

The council confirmed the recent appointment of Mr. Rex Wills as actingconductor of the Takapuna Municipal Band.

“This is the final act,” remarked Mr. Williamson, as the council passed the statutory resolution authorising the surrender of the deed of delegation under which the now defunct Takapuna Tramways and Ferry Co., Ltd., operated the borough transport service for many years.

Milford Pictures, Ltd., again applied for the issue of a licence for a hoarding at Hall’s Corner. The Mayor stated that a licence for this identical site had been issued to another person, who had subsequently decided not to make use of it for a hoarding site. This existing licence would operate until March 31 next, and in view of the council’s policy to discontinue all hoardings as soon as possible, it was resolved to decline the application. Immediate collection of data to place before the Plarbour Bridge Commission was urged by Cr. J. Guiniven. Pl© stated that unless this was prepared in an authoritative manner, Takapuna’s interests were likely to suffer when the commission sits to hear evidence. Crs. A. IP. Wilkie and Guiniven, and the town clerk, Mr. H. L. Bowden, were appointed to act as a sub-committee. Authority to raise the sum of £IB,OOO was giveis. The town clerk explained that this was the available balance of the two drainage loans authorised four years ago, not taking into account the £40,000 reserved for work in the western area or the £6,000 ear-marked for assistance to ratepayers in making connections with the sewerage service. The money will be raised by the issue of 130 debentures for £IOO each and 100 of a face value of £SO. Mr. A. McKee was appointed assist-ant-traffic inspector, under the supervision of the assistant-engineer.
