TWO BIG TALKIES The colourful lives of vaudeville j players is depicted in the entertain- | ing~ part-talkie now being screened at j the Roxy Theatre, Queen Street. The featured players, including j Eddie Quillan, a versatile comedian. Lina Basquette, a famous dancer, J Bessie Barriscale and Carol Lombard, a clever actress, acquit themselves with fine artistry. The theme is decidedly theatrical, and many of the scenes take place behind the curtain of a vaudeville theatre. An enjoyable vaudeville programme, .in which talented players perform their, various turns, is presented. The love romance of Quillan and Miss Basquette. who - are dancing partners in the story, has interest and charm. Bessie Barriscale, who returns to the screen after several years’ retirement, provides her old admirers with an excellent portrayal of an old burlesque queen. The picture is cleverly directed by Mr. Paul L. Stein, and from the opening scene to the conclusion, the interest is well maintained. But that is not all of the Roxy s : programme. A second talkie is also ; being presented, entitled, “Sal of Singa- l pore,” an unusual sea tale with an i Eastern setting, and a fine romantic and dramatic theme.
