Cracks Work Quietly on Riccarton Tracks
AN EASY MORNING NEW ARRIVALS (Special to THE SUN) CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. . All the cracks were on the track at Riccarton this morning, but Silver Paper and Aspiring were the only gallopers to go fast,. Silver Paper with a feather-weight in the saddle sprinted, live the outside of the trial grass in 1 2 3-e, and for the same distance Aspiring equalled those figures. Aspiring also had a very light boy in the saddle, but she ran her last half mile in the fast time of 47 3-5. an attractive gallop. ' Trainers had the use of the plough track and the outside of the trial grass, but most of the horses were restricted to easy tasks on the plough. Silver Paper, who looks none the worse for his two races at Wellington, showed his usual brilliance and for the last half mile occupied 48 3-5 without being pushed. He is not engaged on the opening day of the C.J.C.’s Metropolitan Meeting, but he will contest the G. G. Stead Cup. in which he will be ridden by L. J. Ellis. Though she has not won a race this season, Aspiring has made a remarkable improvement since the Dunedin meeting, and as the result of her brilliant sprint this morning she must be given, an outside chance in the Stewards’ Handicap. On Saturday she ran a slow first furlong, taking 15s, but she finished at a great bat over the last half mile, recording 47 3-5. Aspiring will be ridden in the Stewards’ by the North Island light-weight, W. Broughton. The filly was left in the Derby and Oaks, but it is probable that she will be reserved for the Oaks. Seatown In Favour Seatown and Yoma, who arrived yesterday, were restricted to easy exercise on the plough. Both horses look in excellent condition, especially Seatown, who may start second choice for the Cup on Saturday. T. Green rides him, while A G. Murray probably will be found on Yoma. Yoma has had only two races this spring, but despite this he looks well. However, his trainer doubts whether he has had preparation that will enable him to stay solidly the run of two miles. The old fellow looks particularly well, and may show to advantage in the shorter middle distance handicaps at the carnival. Tray Bond was given easy work. D. Cotton will have a mount on the Tea >Tray filly in the Welcome Stakes. Eastwood will have the ride on Waving Corn in the Stewards. Paganelli, ridden by H. Goldfinch, was given easy work on the plough. [ The Lord Quex gelding is in charge of K. Larsen, as the horse’s trainer, M. J Carroll, will not be at the meeting. Both Cimabue and Concentrate were on the track. The Cup candidate appears to have come through a very solid preparation, and is going to behard to beat in Saturday’s big two-mile race. Cimabue also looks well and is sure to run a big race in the Stewards, for which he is one of the popular After Ten (L. Evans) and Toomyvara (E. Shaw) were schooled over a round of the hurdles. After Ten gave a first-class display and seemingly is a good hurdler in the making. It would not be at all surprising to see him run well in his engagements at the meeting. Oriflamb (L. Evans) schooled brilliantly over four furlongs. Gala Day (I. Tilson) and Aberfeldy (A. Peart) recorded 1.14 for a round of the hurdles, both giving a good display. Aberfeldy’s effort was most impressive. Hoylake was given pace work in the middle. He looks in great order. Historic In Good Shape Historic, winner of the Winter, Avondale, and Mitchelson Cups, was on the track. He has come through his preparation in excellent fashion and is going to be a hard nut to crack in Saturday’s race. Talisker and King Midas, who arrived yesterday, were both restricted to light exercises. The English horse, Dolomite, a member of H. Lorigan’s stable, was allotted easy work. tie is a nice cut of a horse and if he is as good as he looks he should win races in the Dominion. Amorist (G. Salt) jumped two hurdles and Pangolin (E. Shaw) was schooled over four hurdles. He did his work well. In the Shade did strong work on the trial grass. Spearmiss also did strong work on the same track. Princess Betty, Tigrano and Merry Peel, G. New’s team, which arrived yesterday, all look well. Heisler (G. Salt) jumped four hurdles. His time for the round was 1.18. F. Shaw arrived from Wingatui yesterday with Kapuna and Francolin. A. E. Didham also has arrived at headquarters with Tembroney and Solmar. The following horses from the South are expected to arrive this evening: —C. Geisler, Money Mine, Stealth, Red Royal, Waving Corn, Some Toff and Sailing Home; D. P.
