CHINA’S GRIEVANCES
MANCHURIAN QUESTION
DEBATED A TENSE ATMOSPHERE TOKYO, Tuesday. At the Pacific Relations Conference a debate on the Manchurian question was opened in a tense atmosphere. However restraint and moderation characterised the attitudes of the Chinese and Japanese delegates. The grievances and demands of China were outlined and illustrated. The Japanese delegates then explained the existing situation. There was apparent a wide divergence, but the analogy of the extraterritorial settlement suggests the possibility of a compromise. Today’s work has cleared the ground for a discussion of the general principles and for the approach and study of detailed problems in the next two days.
