V.C. WHO SOLD MATCHES
PITIFUL CIRCUMSTANCES REVEALED PRINCE’S DINNER PLANS Reed. 1.30 p.m. LONDON, Tuesday. The Prince of Wales’s dinner to V.C. holders will be a record gathering. There are now 14 from overseas here, including one from India, and another batch of 15 from Canada tomorrow. The British Legion estimates there are 500 alive in the United Kingdom, but the remainder are missing from one cause or another, chiefly due to the reluctance of those who have fallen on evil times to reveal themselves. It lias been learned that one V.C. holder was reduced to selling matches in , the street. YVhen his circumstances were revealed, generous offers of help were made. Since the institution of the V.C. in 1556, there have been 1,157 awards. The menu of the dinner consists of Empire soup, fillet of sole a la Victoria, Southdown mutton, Surrey chicken, salad cream of Flanders, and ices decorated with poppy-coloufed Victoria Crosses. The wine trade is giving red and white wines, champagne, port, and brandy, and London hotels are providing the chefs.
