MOUNT ALBERT ROUSED

CONCESSION RISE AND NO FLAT RATE TRANSPORT CRITICISM Protests were entered at the Mount Albert Borough Council's meeting last evening against the increase in concession cards made by the Auckland Transport Board and the decision of the board not to take further action in flat rate fare proposals. Mr. A. A. Buckley lead the objec- ] tions to the increase in tramway con- I cession costs, and moved that the council should make a protest. This was carried unanimously, the Mayor, Mr. Li. E. Rhodes, stating his pleasure at the action of the council in supporting the attitude he personally had adopted before the Transport Board. Speaking to the council, Mr. Buckley referred to the “big six” of the Transport Board, and their part in the voting on the question, but Mr. Rhodes pointed out that one city member, Mr. E. J. Phelan, had voted against the increase. “There is one member of the board who is supposed to represent outside bodies, but he is generally opposed to their views,” continued Mr. Buckley. “I am not mentioning any name. Our tramway system has long been saddled with the losses on the buses, and we, as a borough, should take a stand with other boroughs. It may not yet be too late for something to be done by adopting a attitude.” Answering a question by Mr. Buckley, the Mayor said the new tramway concession cards were printed before the question was brought forward. “It was a wrong thing to do,” he said, “but the explanation to the board was that the question was being expedited.” Mr. Buckley: The board is going the right way to lose patronage. Mr. J. R. Langley was the seconder of the motion. A notification from the board that it was not intending to take further action in introducing flat rate fares brought another protest from the council. Mr. Buckley contended that the board had practically ignored the decision reached by local bodies in conference in Mount Eden.

On the motion of Mr. Langley, it was decided to send a written objection.
