CITY BUILDING
Permits for Ten Months Total £1,295,636
Building permits involving the sum of £1,295,636 were issued by the City Council during, the first ten months of this year. In the corresponding period of 1928 the total was £1,490,124, the drop this year being largely accounted for by an unusually small total for October, as compared with a record figure for that month last year. Dwellings accounted for 37 permits last month, as compared with 40 in September. The following table compares the value of permits issued at the Town Hall during the ten months of 1929 and 192S:— 1920. 1925. ■Tanuai v £125,599 . £65,051 February 141,804 211,809 March 106,411 95.866 April 89,994 50,75 a jjav 105.909 108,487 'jurio 302,708 159,540 July 95,214 96,960 August 112,176 137,926 September .. .. 131,072 106,932 October 51,719 452,51 S Totals . . . . £1,295,636 £1,490,124 No very large works were included in the permits issued last month. Additions to the Northern Roller Mills store in Fort Street accounted lor £8 21S, and alterations to the rope works in Stanley Street of Donaghys, Limited, for £9,535. When wardrobe and cupboard space is limited, four hat boxes placed one on top of the other and covered with some pretty coloured cretonne to match the bedroom make a decorative hat cupboard. Narrow wood moulding is nailed to each corner of the pile and a flat piece of wood placed on top. If one end of the box is cut open, and a flap attached, the hats can be taken in and out from the front or sides of the “compartments.” This will keep hats from getting out of shape so easily.
