HUSBAND ACCUSES WIFE
“SOMETHING IN HIS FOOD” TO PAY MAINTENANCE From Qur ,pwn Correspondent THAMES, Tuesday. “1 left my wife because she put something in my food which made me sick. I would have died if I had stayed.” This was the defence put forward by Jens Koefoed Spanner, when charged in the Magistrate’s Court with failing to maintain -his wife and child. Eva Lyal Spanner said they were married in 1922 and had a child five years old. Her husband left her last January and she had only one letter from him. She admitted she had £4O in cash at the time. She used the money for maintenance and sold the furniture for £4. Defendant stated he lived at Kaitaia, and when he left home there was £l5O worth of furniture, and he gave his wife £4O. He said he was prepared to send the child to Denmark, and again repeated that his wife put something in the food. Defendant broke into a voluble accusation against his wife’s character, but the magistrate, Mr. F. W. Platts, pulled him up sharply with “We are not going into that.” An order was made for £1 a week.
