AMENDMENT TO ACT COUNCIL TO BECOME SENATE THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Monday. Several amendments to the University of New Zealand Act, were introduced in the House of Representatives this evening by Governor-General’s message, and the Bill was read the first time. It was explained by the Minister of Education, the Hon. H. Atmore, that one amendment was to provide for an alteration in the name New Zealand University Council to Senate. Another clause sought, to make membership of the University Senate open to persons receiving not more than £SO from the university. In regard to the Senate it was also sought that two representatives of private schools be elected, instead of appointed. In another clause it was provided that, in the event of a £ for £ subsidy being granted on contribution for buildings both contribution and the subsidy could be used. In respect to the grant of 7,500 dollars from the Carnegie foundation for university extension work in the country, the Bill would authorise a £ for £ subsidy.
