CHINCHILLAS FOR HAMILTON
NEW INDUSTRY STARTED From Our Own Correspondent HAMILTON, Monday. Hamilton will shortly have a new industry as the result of the projected operations of a private company which proposes to conduct chinchilla breeding on a large scale and market the pelts. A property of 20 acres has been purchased at Newstead, a few miles out of Hamilton, where a start will be made with 34 valuable chinchillas due to arrive from England tomorrow. Each of these is said to be worth as much as a first-class dairy cow. The stock has been selected by one of the leading English judges. Included in the consignment is a registered champion buck reputed to be worth over £SOO. At the end of two years the company hopes to be producing S.OOO pelts annually. In additiou to supplying the local demand the promoters will export a large precentage of skins to Australia and further afield. Efforts will also be made to use the carcases, which are quite edible, possessing a flavour and fibre not unlike chicken. Young stock in time will be disposed of to farmers desirous to running the mas a side-line.
