COMING HOME

STOWAWAY’S DISLIKE OF AUSTRALIA Disliking Australia, Harry William Newland stowed away on the Maheno at Sydney to come home to New Zealand. He was arrested on arrival at Auckland, and sentenced at the Police Court this morning to 14 days’ imprisonment. Newland, aged 30, pleaded guilty. Sub-Inspector McCarthy said that the man had worked his passage to Sydney, but did not find Australia so congenial as he had imagined, so he stowed away to return to the Dominion. He had been found in the firemen’s quarters on November 1. The fare was £6 10s, but accused had no money. Remarking that he was reluctant to send Newland to gaol, Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., said that the practice of stowing away was too prevalent, and must be checked.
