PAPATOETOE SPORTS CLUB WELL-CONDUCTED MEETING "With a total of 228 competitors for 24 events, the Papatoetoe Sports Club put through a programme of exceptional merit on Saturday. More than that, every event went oft’ to schedule, and the big programme was carried out right up to time. The control of the meeting was in the hands of the president, Mr. W. J. Hindman, who was a noted runner some 15 years ago, and his long experience was responsible for the admirable manner in which the meeting was carried through. He was ably assisted by an enthusiastic committee. Mr. H. C. Webster, the club secretary, both prior to and on the day, had a strenuous task, and carried out his duties in a manner which left nothing to be desired. The handicapper and starter, Mr. C. G. Culpan, got his fields away well, and was responsible for bringing oft; some very fine finishes. The wonderful success achieved augurs well for the future of the club. The 100yds maiden unearthed some promising sprinters in B. F. Gardiner, A. Dawson, A. G. Little, P. Anderson, C. Docherty, F. M. Lound, S. Nicholson, W. G. Thomson and J. Jones, all of whom show promise. Miss T. Richards won the district women’s championship of 75yds in a manner which stamped her as a real champion. Miss G. Billington, who finished fast in second place, will be heard of again shortly. SCHOOLBOY’S SUCCESS The district junior championship of 100yds was won by A. Dawson, the schoolboy champion of Auckland, from whom great things may be expected. D. F. Gardiner, who won the 100yds open handicap, and the 100 yd maiden, was the find of the meeting. In the former event, Warren and Roper, of Auckland, who ran second and third, respectively, both showed good form. A. J. Elliott qualified for the final, but was obviously not quite ready. The same could be said of L. IT. Meredith. Ron McKenzie, who won the halfmile and mile in good style, is another find for the local club. A. Blow and L. C. Barker, Auckland, both ran well in the half-mile to fill places. N. F. Cooper ran a great race in the mile from scratch, to be beaten in a stirring finish by McKenzie. Iverr-Taylor, Auckland, was in good form, running a dead-beat in the 220yds for first, and second in the 440yds. LOCAL MAN WINS V. R. Smytheman, a local runner, making his first appearance in open company, put up a creditable performance in the 220yds, to dead-heat with Kerr-Taylor off 9yds. He is a fine stamp of athlete. R. L. Barley ran a fine 440yds to win comfortably. S. Nicholson, a local maiden runner, secured third place by good running.
