“APPALLING POSITION”

MARRIED POSTAL EMPLOYEES MUST BORROW “MORTGAGED TO THE HILT” “The position of married officers on the £240 and £295 barrier is appalling. It is estimated that no less than 80 per cent, of the married officers of these grades are more or less mortgaged up to the hilt, having either borrowed money from the departmental funds or private money-lending institutions.” This statement was made to The Sun today by a postal official, in referring to the recent trouble in connection with the claims of the Civil Service for better salary schedules. "It is noticed that politicians are continually harping on the return of the ‘cuts,’ ” he said. “As previously stated we do not want to have anything to do with the ‘cuts.’ The big behind the persisent harping by politicians on the ‘cuts’ is that it will probably result in their own ‘cuts’ being restored simultaneously with what they advocate for the rest of the Civil Service. ‘ It is at present an impossibility for the public to have a satisfied service while the present inadequate salary barriers remain.”
