ELLERSLIE’S BEST SCORE

HARBOUR BOARD STARS WELL The first few Ellerslie men made a poor opening to the season’s cricket- ; ing. Although the grounds were in ; good order, the batsmen gave a most j uninspiring exhibition of senior cricket, taken as a team. Of the four who reached double i figures, R. Burton and Watkins managed to strike something like form, the former just missed his half-century, and the other passed that mark by four, when he was run out. The fielding of the Harbour Board men was not inspiring, Turner and Mann taking most of the bowling honours, the latter’s average at one stage being three wickets for four runs. Ellerslie managed the best team score of the day. The Harbour Board men replied enthusiastically to Ellerslie’s 159. The stumps score of three wickets for 81 promises well for them. Their team is practically identical with that of last season, when the Board men won the championship for the second year in succession. Details: ELLERSLIE First Innings. FIELDS WELL The Wesleyan Young Men’s Institute is a new senior grade team, and if batting turns out to be as good as their fielding, they will go a good way toward the championship. They had all the Albion men out by five minutes past four, and made a fair start with their batting. The Albion men are largely recruited from the ranks of the old Victoria team, which has officially disbanded. The veteran of that club, Alec Gedye, opened the season’s play "partnered by TVright. This new man was caught before he reached his double figures, and his partner managed. only ten more. Later Viscoe hit up an excellent 42. He is also one of “the old brigade,” having last year played for Ponsonby. Young, another of the new men, was not out for 29, holding his wicket well, while three of his team mates came and went. When W.Y.M.I. opened shortly before five o’clock, the batting showed they had put in some hard practice at the nets. In an hour and a-half they had lost four wickets for 90, and have a good chance of pulling off the match if they keep this up. Details; ALBION First Innings. After a promising opening parnership between C. Watts and Elliott. who, though generally cautious with the bowling, particularly of Barnes, vigorously hit out at anv loose stuff, securing many runs in this way. Then Ponsonby changed its attack. Cooper taking the opposite end to

| Barnes. The change was disastrous I for the batsmen, four of whom were | sent back to the pavilion with only a few runs added. Just when Green j Lane’s fate seemed in the balance, Paxton stopped an impending debacle. ! He infused tremendous power into his i hitting and drove at almost every- ; thing that came his way, landing a ; magnificent sixer over the inner , Domain fence. He was clean bowled I next ball. " . ! Once more Green Lane was m dim- | culties, and it was only a determined i and cautious eighth-wicket stand by j Wreath and Hughes that carried the ! score over the century mark. Ponsonby almost reached the oppo- j ; sition’s score by the time stumps were , drawn, principally through the fine | j innings of Edmonds and Masters.
