CIRCLE OF THE NEW 1 ZEALAND PENWOMEN ! HOLD SUCCESSFUL COM- j PETITION A LOVELY DISPLAY A most successful -garden afternoon was .held by the Garden Makers’ Circle of the League of New Zealand Penwomen in the club rooms yesterday, many members being present. The circle has been in existence for little more than a year, but such great interest has been shown that the display of flowers was very good. On show were stock, sweet peas, gladioli, roses, antirrhinums, carnations, Canterbury bells, pansies, and acquilegia, the roses gaining first place, with gladioli as a close second. Mrs. Leonard Griffiths acted as judge. The prizewinners were: Hoses. —Mrs. Tweedie 1, Miss Blanche Sweet 2. Gladioli.—Mrs. Austin 1. Carnations.—Mrs. Stuart Boyd, 1. Annuals.—Mrs. Lewins, 1. Perennials.—Mrs. Stuart Boyd. A special prize was also won by Mrs. Boyd as winner of the greatest number of points, the prize being a delightful water-cplour painting. Luring the afternoon a brief talk was given by Mr. R. Wilson, the daffodil expert, who expressed his great admiration of New Zealand’s scenic beauties, and the wonderful way in which plants grow in this country. He referred to the great development of daffodil culture, of which the pioneer had been the Kev. Mr. Englehart, now an old man living in England. Helpful advice on gardening matters was given by Mr. Griffiths.
