FROM SIX CLUBS TO 70
SUBURBAN CRICKET’S PROGRESS The Auckland Suburban Cricket Association is not only looking hopefully into the future; it can also look back cheerfully into the past. During the short period it has been in existence it has made great progress. For instance, the photograph reproduced here shows the representatives of the six clubs which comprised the association in its first season, 1913-14. From six clubs the association has increased in numerical strength year by year to such an extent that it now has 70 clubs, with a registered membership of approximately 1,000 players, under its control. In the picture the man in the centre is the president, at that time well known in Auckland and interprovincial cricket as “Tom” Elliott. This worthy veteran has now retired from both the game and the management. Seated on his right is the late Mr. 11. L. Claudet, who passed away a few months ago. He was a past president. Seated on the left is the late Mr. W. MacCormiek, a member of a wellknown Auckland cricketing family and a brother of Judge MacCormiek. Standing on the left in the back row is Mr. J. Elliott, who was re-elected president at the last annual meeting for the twelfth year in succession. He is still one of the opening batsmen for Green Lane. The clubs represented in tlio picture are:—Railway, Messrs. T. and J. Elliott; Onehunga, Mr. G. Wilson; Gasworks, Mr. IT. Allen; “Herald,” Messrs. R. Ninkie and J. R. Henderson; Plasterers, Mr. W. Heath; Remuera, Mr. H. Claudet; and Maritime, Mr. W. MacCormiek. Those were the days when the Domain was in charge of Mr. “Bob” Yates as caretaker, and the wickets were infinitely better than today, not because the present caretakers, Mesrs. Matthews and Roy Pearce, are inferior, but because of the apathy of the civic fathers in not supplying material and encouraging the players to participate in the national summer game. The annual interprovincial tournament is to be played all Christmas week on the Auckland Domain. This will be the most comprehensive fixture yet arranged, as it will comprise players representing Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland and probably Dunedin. In addition to this, representative teams from the junior ranks will participate in a Dominion competition for a handsome trophy, presented by the Auckland City and Suburban Association. Mr. J. Elliott, president, and Mr. E. Stallworthy, secretary, are now negotiating with various authorities in connection wth the forthcomng tournament, £md the success of the fixure is assured. These two capable officials have been associated for many years and have profited greatly in the hard school of experience. A considerable number of players have joined this association for this year’s club contests, and providing sufficient wickets are available, this season’s activities promise to eclinse all previous records. -"VETERAN.”
