Coloured Linen
BEDROOM LINEN IN LOVELY • PASTEL SHADES GIVES PERSONALITY TO A ROOM FLORAL DECORATIONS Just as the white damask tablecloth has been ousted from the table by coloured cloths and table mats—so has coloured linen in lovely pastel tints brought a change in bed linen. The soft colours add personality and charm to one’s room, while it also lends itself to hand embroidery worked in harmonising colours. The top sheet has quite a deep hemstitched hem—about four inches-*— along which is embroidered a floral design, or sometimes three or four rows of satin-stitch spots or a bold monogram or single letter in the centre of the hem. The pillow-cases—open at both ends—are hemstitched and extend some inches beyond the actual length of the pillow, and embroidery decorates them to match the sheet. Such designs as a powdering of daisies or butterflies, tiny buds and small bows are most effective and quickly worked. An alternative to embroidery is slot insertion along the hem in which ribbon is run and tied in ail important-looking bow in the centre, embroidered on the sheet being a spray of spiky flowers, which, rising above the ribbon bow, look as if they were tied in position. Both face and bath towels can be bought with floral decorations in colours —quite a pretty idea —and it gives a nice colourful effect to the bathroom or towel-rail In fact, one can now obtain bath blankets and wraps—bath towels and j everything to match, and a good idea | T saw at the house of a friend Avas i Avindow-curtains to her bathroom j made of floral bordered bath-towel- | ing. TRAVELLING NOVELTIES j There are small irons nowadays, specially made for travelling, which are heated with solid methylated, so that yon can do .your own pressing wherever you are. The iron will stand on end and boil a kettle; it will also take a pair of curling-tongs In one of its grooves. These are specially useful for hotel guests. And then there is the neatest soapbox with a lid, which, when it is lifted automatically, brings your soap up on a perforated try, right into your hands. When closed the tray acts as a drainer.
