Gold Jacket or Padlock In N.Z. Cup Trial ?
The Wellington Trotting Club has at last received the support it deserves in connection with the New Zealand Cup Trial. This event was a few seasons ago placed on the programme at I-lutt Park for the benefit of horses competing in the big race at Christchurch eafly in November. The race is not confined to Cup horses only, and other pacers of high calibre “take on” tho King pins and make things decidedly interesting for them. The field in this year’s trial is easily the best yet carded, and the presence of several well-fancied candidates for the Addington contest will invest both the Wellington heat and the bigger race later on with plenty of interest. Gold Jacket and the Cup The trotting fraternity in this area will be keenly interested in the affair tomorrow on account of Gold Jacket making his appearance, and his display on this occasion will give a further Jirre on his New Zealand Cup prospects. The Gold Bell gelding
lias only had oije race this season, at tho Auckland benefit fixture, but so decisively did lie trounce the field over ten furlongs that he quickly came into the. picture for the Cup. Many of his admirers would prefer to have seen Ted Parkes’s gelding with a twomile run before going to the post in November, but his performance at Hutt Park, if a repetition of his Epsom form, will be sufficient to warrant un-
failing support for Gold Jacket in the Christchurch race. Thirteen sterling pacers colour the card for this test, ten of the number so far claiming a Cup engagement. This quota is accounted for by Imprint, Quality, Linkman, Jack Potts, Talaro, Kohara. Gold Jacket, Great Bingen, Peter Bingen and Padlock. The remaining trio, Jean McElwyn, Western King and Maiwhariti, represent
THE SECRET OF SUCCESS Success crowns the efforts only of those men and women who can work hard and with §unfailing energy and clear-headedness. In other words, success comes to those who have sound, uncomplaining nerves. Wise people knowing that nerves are unable to get sufficient nourishment from their ordinary everyday food, take a course of Marshall’s Phospherine. This wonderful concentrated nerve food is rich in phosphorus which nourishes and invigorates the nervous system. Look after your nerves. Feed them with Marshall’s Fospherine and you, too, will be able to achieve! Obtainable from all chemists and stores. 100 doses for 2s 6d. 4.
VUE Auckland speed-merchant, Gold Jacket, the hope of the North.in the forthcoming New Zealand Cup contest, will be given a good try-out at Wellington tomorrow over a ten-furlong course on which he is meeting several that will later at Addington be opposed to him in the race for the Dominion’s richest prize.
exceptionally fine class, although outside the Cup plane, and they will keep the best of the big guns busy over a mile and a-quarter course. Padlock’s Chance Peter Bingen, holder of the Australasian record for this journey, and the great Padlock, are in pride of place on a 2.40 mark, and while the former has a slight advantage on time, the all-round performances of the Longburn pacer in August will gain him the most friends. In receipt of a sec-
ond is Great Bingen, one of the best horses over all distances ever produced in the Dominion, and if he has returned to his best form will have a big say in the final argument. Gold Jacket on 2.42 will keep those behind him busy, while in the front his rivals will have to go faster than ever to keep from getting their heels tramped on. Kohara, on 2.43, is a solid customer, and if dressed in his best must be troublesome, and should account for Talaro and Jack Potts. But Maiwhariti will be a stumbling block to the whole of the opposition. Coming to the front-liners, Imprint has just shown a return to form, and will be in demand. Jean McElwyn will be in the picture at the distance. Quality and Western King are both smart, and Linkman can hold his own in any society. If he has recovered from his Epsom indisposition, Alborn’s pacer •will be a tough nut to crack. When the post appears in sight, after a keen contest, it may be found that Gold Jacket, Padlock, Kohara and Linkman are fighting it out for supremacy.
