N.Z. Cup Preliminary CLASSY PACERS AT HUTT PARK

Wellington Trotting Card

In order to give the Wellington Club a- chance to get properly on its feet, tho New Zealand Trotting Conference has again agreed to the four permits being used at different sessions. And the club, to show appreciation of this action, promotes attractive cards for each function in the hope of drawing high-class competitors to Hutt Park for the purpose of providing keen and spectacular contests for the benefit and further education of the people of tile Empire City in the popular pastime, list ficetve.?^ t the splendid acceptance proves thlt d 1 tomorrow’s functiqn proves that owners and trainers are behind the Wellington Club in its sport S th^t nd i eUVOUr t 0 Popularise a 1S B made such wonderful front the^xcellent* rnateria^to n action visitors to Hutt Park will Kvo'.w'Tp Wit ‘‘ high-class trotting Dvery item on the card will be stubbornly contested, and thrilling finishes shouid be witnessed in n ny ot the heats. ...any “Abaydo^': 1 *" a SUrVt> ' ° f the flelds b >’ New Track Novdce Handicap wii? he c. 80 called because it xil be the first race decided on the new trotting track, the majority of the runners are off the front mark and it will be difficult for the few back markers to get through. Grand Canyon having succeeded at Greymouth, mav go on winning, and Mac LocandS. has recentiy saluted the judge. Lady Author is a promising sort, and Xelson Gara was in the picture at Greymouth. of those behind the chalk mark, Llewellyn, who is in a later

heat on the end. looks the best. He may not start and Grand Canyon and Baron Derby may be the favourites. Petone Handicap Trot A good field of square-gaiters is engaged here, including recent winners in Bon Boy, Great Way. Nelson Parrish and Tamahine. The last three mentioned have been penalised 36yds for their holiday successes and they will find it difficult to overhaul P ; on Boy. Another solid customer is JLangitero, stable mate of Tamahine, and he will make things interesting. Peter Eyre is always likely to bob up. while Wah is due to show some of his Hawke’s Bay form. St. Petrox is nicely placed, and Miss Leda, who was pacing when last seen under silk, is a useful trotter at the distance. It points to the Rangitero bracket and Bon Boy being most fancied. Bollard Handicap Next to the Cup Trial, this is the most important event of the day. and it has drawn a fine field of improving pacers, with the great and brilliant trotter, Trampfast. to represent the square-gaited fraternity. Giving away 132yds is a hard task, but provided W. Lowe’s trotter tackles the job, thos=9 in front will not require to make any errors on the way. Aleron on the front stands out clear and distinct and whatever heads him off will be entitled to the stake. Kichore. if in the humour, would give the favourites a nasty jar at the finish. Arikitoa, who last year let his people down on several occasions, has recently made just retribution by winning twice in approved style over 10 furlongs. There should be no doubting his ability to get the distance. Cornelian will do better than her stable mate, Vendome, who has paid the penalty for his win at Epsom over a short course. Great Logan is a good one, but so for has not struck form. Zella is more than useful, while Sir Author is a classy sort and if he keeps sound will be knocking at the door. Avenger is one of the consistent sort which Is due to break it for a, first certificate. Looking for prime fancies the public may sort out Aleron and Arikitoa. Borough Handicap There will be a big contingent of improvers seen out in this item, with |

50 per cent, on the limit. KI Direct has some consistent form to his credit and Glenlake is a useful sort. Kelp is about due. and Pleasant Wave is

a possibility. If ready Hilltop would be troublesome, while Sandy Pointer should soon do the trick. Haydoek, Anon, Patsy Phegan and Real Huon are a nice quartet and any one of them is capable of taking out on the day. Cush la D’Or is speedy, and the 24yds penalty should not stop her. Hostess is nicely placed, and Royal Comrade penalised to 60yds is a real good one. The order may be Cushia D’Or (.if started), Real Huon or Patsy Phegan. New Zealand Cup Trial Handicap The next item on the programme, the New Zealand Cup Trial Handicap, is fully discussed under a separate heading. It promises to be a great race and one that should be well worth witnessing. Ten Cup candidates will be opposed by three smart 10-furlong pacers in Maiwhairiti, Jean McElwyn and Western King, and they will keep the best of the big two-mile contestants from catching a chill on the journey tomorrow. Padlock, Great Bingen, Gold Jacket, Kohara and Linkman represent good class in the big handicap, and when the machine closes the order may be Gold Jacket, Padlock or Kohara. Short Handicap Another large field will parade for this 10-furlong heat, many of the competitors having taken part in an earlier event. P’orm in the Novice Handicap should prove a very fair guide for this contest and the second horse in the opening item will be a hard proposition in this' go. Grand Canyon may earlier earn a penalty, and Mac Locanda and Llewellyn,

should their marks remain as originally adjusted, will be dangerous this time. Reylet is well spoken of in some quarters, while among the rearguard Jessie Huon, Nelsonsian and Kafa are apt to spell danger. When the public gets busy, given a start off their correct handicap, they may require Llewellyn and Mac Locanda. President’s Handicap After numerous pacing contests the square-gaiters will be allowed again to show their ability, this time over a two-mile course. With Bon Boy and Deceitful. W. Lowe lias a strong hand, and if the mare should be ready to £o her best, then it would not be necessary to look any farther for a favourite.- Peter Eyre can stay well, while Wah’s best displays have been over the longer journey. At Hastings he found the 'shorter course unsuitable, but won each day at two miles. Rangitero should be able to see the journey out. and Great Way and Nelson Parrish are both sure to be dangerous when it Comes to the finish. There should be good support for Deceitful and Wah. Wellington Handicap The fine card will reach finality with a big field of good class improving pacers contesting this item, which bears a very open aspect. Two recent winners in Royal Comrade and Cushia D’Or appeal off the front, but the latter may be absent on account of an earlier engagement. Loiterer, El Direct, Kelp and Haydoek are other possibilities on the front line. Farther back Aleron. Cora Tacks. Dilnon, Arikitoa, Zella and Avenger will all have a good following, while two, in Logan Pride and Halmore, if dressed in their best regalia, will show the visitors how to handle the track. Royal Comrade will be favourite over Cushia D’Or, but in the latter’s absence Cora .Tacks must command respect.
