WELLINGTON NOTES

TRIALS FOR CARTERTON ROl DE VAL GOES FAST (Special to THE SUN) WELLINGTON, Thursday. Rain has fallen most of the day here, but the tracks at Trentham had not been seriously affected ■when work commenced this morning. The Blenheim horse Rabbi was worked in comjJany with Make Up. I-Ie was much too good for his stablemate, and so pleased his trainer that he has decided to run him on Saturday at Carterton, where he is an acceptor’ in the Wairarapa County Cup. IT. Gray, who rocle him in his work this morning, will be in the saddle. Considering the class of race he contests, Make Up went well and should } v . ln a minor event soon, especially if . „, rr ,' ei ' manners are improved A Wellington hack that is galloping well is Push. He should run well at Carterton, and it is on the cards that he will be an early winner. Paganelli ran a smart half-mile this morning-, breaking 49 and doing it without any great display of effort. Roi do Val is very fit for his engagement at Carterton on Saturday He ran six furlongs in 1.16 J pleasingly. It took Shot Silk 50 to run half a lon-ei- ana streamer half a second a „Y h .i te Fang looks exceptionally well, and though he did no fast work this morning lie will strip very fit for his forthcoming engagements at Riccarton. Goshawk and the Stewards t ,A ® te , wa , rds ’ Handicap candidate that ■« 01 ked well at Trentham this morning was Goshawk. Goshawk has the very handy weight of 5.3, and it !nt e rff CaUSe no surprise if he comes into faiour on race day, as he is improving, and there is a likelihood cf Gray having the mount on him. Duellona, who is engaged at Carterton on Saturday, galloped moderately over half a mile with Agrestic this morning, and could have done betThe New Zealand Cup candidate, Concentrate, who is favourite here for the race, continues to do well, and will go South early next week, probably on Monday night. He will be accompanied by Cimabue. who is strongly fancied here for the Stewards’ Handicap. Admiral Brake has improved since racing at Trentham. I-Ie slipped over six furlongs in 1.17 this morning in g'reat style. Riders at Carterton Riding engagements for Carterton on Saturday include the following: Gray.— Dancing Star (Trial Plate!, Rabbi (Cup), Tourist (Taratahi Hack

Handicap) and Royal Game (Maungaraki Handicap). B. H. Morris. —Historic (Bunny Memorial), Push (Taratahi Hack Handicap), Roi de Val (Maungaraki Handicap) and Banket (Electric Hack Handicap). A. Fratus. —Duellona (Trial Plate). J. Barry. —HTinting Boy (Electric Hack Handicap). J. Procter. —Balloon (High-weight). T. Webster. —Kiriana (Cup), Painting (Trial Plate). Borsalene (Bunny Memorial), Acredity (Carterton Hack Handicap), and Imateagirl (Taratahi Hack Handicap). Ft. S. Bagby. —St. Melba (Carterton Hack Handicap). K. Voitre. —Patearoa (Taratahi Hack Handicap) and Vesperus (Cup). Rasouli, an acceptor in the Carrington High-weight Handicap at Carterton, is not likely to be at the meeting. Ho ran fairly well at Trentham on Labour Day 7 ', but it has been decided to give him time before racing him again. Historic, Panther and Roi de Val are booked to go South for the New Zealand Cup meeting on Monday night. H. Gray has been offered some good mounts for the C.J.C. spring meeting, and it is probable he will make the trip South. Concentrate lias come strongly into favour for the New Zealand Cup since his good finishing effort in the Harcourt Cup at Trentham on Labour Day. He looks very well and can yet be improved in condition. It will not tend to send him out of favour if it becomes definitely known that H. Gray will ride him in the cup. At present, however, L. G. Morris is engaged to take the mount. Morris is nursing a broken collarbone, but expects to be well by cup day. Since the breakdown of Pink Coat, Count Palatine has come into favour locally as a rival to Honour and others in the New Zealand Derby, which will be contested at Riccarton on Monday week. Count Palatine is by Paladin, out of the dam of Martarma, so is well enough bred, but it is a big step from hack company to Derby class. He only won his hack race at Trentham this week by the narrowest of margins, but he looks a good sort and was going far better at the end of the race than at anv other stage. Historic 1 galloped a mile this morning and did his work excellently’. He is to race at Carterton in the open sprint on featurday to sharpen him up for his New Zealand Cup engagement. There is a disposition in some quarters to favour Seatown for the New Zealand Cup. The Archiestown gelding ran so well in the Harcourt Cup that his chance cannot be overlooked altogether. It is probable T. Green will have the mount.
