Carterton Races
FINE FIELDS FOR TOMORROW
Prospects Discussed MINOR meetings only are scheduled for tomorrow, these being the Carterton and Banks Peninsula fixtures. These will be the last race meetings in the South prior to the New Zealand Cup. opening at ltieearton tomorrow week. Earli Bird’s” review of the prospects at Carterton is set out below.
It is really remarkable that only a few horses failed to survive the acceptances for the Carterton meeting, and the result is that excellent fields will be seen out in all events. First item on the bill is the Trial Plate Pat's Boy is due for an improvement on his second at Masterton the other day, and of the others possibilities are Painting. Streamer, Projection. Plane, Rational 11.. Dancing Star, Duellona, Rioghail. Acreline and Ben Mur. Favourites may bo PAT’S BOY BEN HUB. Carrington High-Weight Hack It is possible that the horses at the top will have a lot to say in the finish, lor they followed up their good form at Masterton when stepped out at Trentham. These are Austerity and Tourist. Balloon is unreliable, and Mount Shannon and Moapai (a Waipawa winner) are possibilities. Rasouli and Otauru Lass are most fancied of those farther down. Perhaps the best backed will be AUSTERITY TOURIST Wairarapa County Cup Here again the horses heading the list may be the really dangerous candidates. Rabbi has a lot of weight now, but he is an improving horse. It is not known for certain if he will run. Atholspear is fast coming to form, and was considered unlucky at Trentham. Spearmiss has been a disappointment of late, but she has the pace and stamina. Rouex was third at Masterton, and Rameses can go fast. Vesperus is a long-time coming back to his best, and so, too, is Courageous, who for some time was an early fancy for the New Zealand Cup. There seems little doubt that the favourite if started will be RABBI, or ATHOLSPEAR COURAGEOUS. Carterton Hack It was recognised recently that St. Melba could be expected in the near future, and there is the opportunity in this event. Shot Silk goes fast, and so does Dermod. Ben Hur and * Dainty Ways claim other engagements; the latter is well thought of. Acredity and Footpad show promise, and Myola on
Avondale running snx weeks ago should go very close to beating the lot. Perhaps the backers will plump for MYOLA DERMOD Bunny Memorial Handicap Historic may find the journey too short, for it is to be his final run in public prior to contesting the New Zealand Cup a week later. Atholspear reads ljetter in the longer race, but Dobbin may be all the better for the schooling he has undergone; there is little doubt as to his pace. Quantum is an improver, and so are Ransom and Full Mark. Melissa must go well on the minimum, with Borsalene the pick of the others on the same mark. It is a trappy sort of affair, but in declaring in favour of this pair punters may not be far astray: DOBBIN MELISSA. Taratahi Hack Most of the horses engaged here will have raced earlier in the day, so their form might furnish some sort of guide. Shortly is fast, but has been most disappointing since the Grand National meeting, Austerity would be greatly fancied if reserved, and Waterspear. Royal Opera, Tourist, Push. Money Mint, Vinella, Pari and Imateagirl read the pick of the others. Best backed may be AUSTERITY: if absent ROY'AL OPERA SHORTLY. Maungaraki Handicap This has attracted Quite a good field, but some of the horses may not be quite ready. Several, too, are engaged earlier. However, in a fine betting race it is probable that backers will decide in favour of ROI DE VAL MOUTOA TREASURY Electric Hack Handicap The distance will suit the top-weight nicely, but he has a solid impost to lump. Hunting Boy should be improved by his first outing of the season, at Masterton a fortnight ago, and must bo hard to beat. High Society, Dainty Ways, L© Champ and Acreline are probably the best of the remainder. For a recovery backers may go for HUNTING BOY DAINTY” IYAYS
