BABIES LEFT BEHIND
RHINELAND SOLDIERS DEPART THOUSANDS OF FATHERS Reed. 9.5 a.m. BERLIN, Wednesday. Like Kipling’s absent-minded beggar, the Rhineland occupation troops are apparently leaving a lot of little things behind. The Radical newspaper, “Welt Buehne,” estimates that the British soldiers left 8,000 stranded babies. It alleges that they are systematically evading their obligations, in contradistinction to the French, who are voluntarily providing for their offspring. The Berlin correspondent of the British United Press is, however, officially informed that the Britons behaved more decently than the French, who were most remiss. The most surprising allegation is that, in proportion to their number, the United States soldiers have the worst record. Unofficial estimates suggest that the total of occupation babies is 15,000.
