SLANDER PROVED
DAMAGES FOR WOMAN CHARACTER DEFAMED From Our Own Correspondent TE KUITI, Wednesday. Damages for £3O were awarded to Mrs. Iris O’Brien, of Kopaki, by Mr. F. W. Platts, S.M., yesterday, who held that she had been slandered by Harry Gaby, millhand, Kopaki. i Mrs. O’Brien’s claim was for £3OO j damages, and she alleged that de- ! fendant had slandered her by saying j to Mr. and Mrs. Saric, of Kopaki: | “What I seen in the planer-shed with Mrs. O’Brien and Percy Clemmett was enough for me.” In a reserved decision, Mr. Platts held that the words complained of were obviously defamatory and actionable. On the question of credibility the magistrate said he preferred the evidence of plaintiff and her witnesses. Judgment would be for plaintiff for £3O, with costs £9 13s 4d. In respect to a claim against Mrs. Gaby, the magistrate said the evidence of the principal witness was not corroborated and in this instance plaintiff would be nonsuited, but without costs.
