AT LONG ODDS
OUTSIDER BACKED FOR BIG MONEY MELBOURNE CUP MARKET One of the biggest commissions on the Melbourne Cup since Phar Lap and Xightmarch have dominated the situation in the last three weeks, has been launched for a horse named Shadow King, says a Melbourne writer under date of October 25. He has been backed for £25,000 for his owner. Mr. F. E. Shillabeer. Shadow King is a four-year-old by Comedy King and is evidently believed to be a sound stayer. Until this season he had done little, but in his last two starts he has won well, and his latest victory was gained at Moonee Valley some weeks ago over 11 furlongs. Among the horses he defeated was Prince Viol, who subsequently proved the form with his victory in the Coongv Handicap and his third in the Caulfield Cup. The fact that Shadow King was j backed this week suggests that his | stable fancies him for the Moonee Val- ! ley Cup (in which he finished third to Prince Viol and Shadow King), and connections wanted to get the Melbourne Cup money before he exposed his form in that race. Secured Long Prices Long odds were, of course, secured oft the big operators, and one of these laid £IO,OOO, another £IO,OOO, and a sum of £5,000 was secured from a third, making a total of £25,000 in all. Apart from the backing of Shadow King, there has been no heavy betting on the Cup, but the fact that punters keep supporting Phar Lap, the favourite, has resulted in his shortening now to fractional odds, and he he is an even more pronounced favourite than ever. Paquito found a few supporters because i of his good gallop, defeating Kidaides on the track this morning, and he shortened a little. Money for Prince Viol Prince Viol has been a little in demand, too. He was backed for the Melbourne Cup at long prices prior to running in the Caulfield Cup, but somebody has backed up on him. How his stamina is going to improve sufficiently, however, to enable him to stay out two miles is a mystery, seeing that he petered out at a mile and three furlongs in the Caulfield Cup. Perhaps iC he be patiently ridden he will stay further than he did in the Caulfield Cup. When business concluded today the following was the order of fancy: Melbourne Cup Run November 5. 2 Miles. Phar Lap. (Interval of 31.) Xightmarch. (Interval af 7.) Second Wind. (Interval of 2.) Winalot. (Interval of G.) Carradale, Demost, High Syce, Bac? chus. Bacchus and Black Duchess failed to survive the final acceptance last Tuesday.) BACK FROM FIJI L. PINE’S SUCCESSFUL TRIP L. A. Pine, one of the Dominion’s best known horsemen, returned on Tuesday from Suva, Fiji, where he has been following his occupation. During his sojourn there he had 27 mounts, and achieved considerable distinction in that be was never out of the money, steering 15 winners* 10 seconds and two thirds. Pine contracted to ride for only two sportsmen, securing £2 for a losing mount and £lO for a win. The Hawera jockey does not intend to let the grass grow under his feet now that he has returned, and lie is already on his way to Motukarara, where the Banks Peninsula Racing Club holds its meeting on .Saturday. He is to do the riding for his uncle, W. Pine, of Riccarton.
