THE CAMBRIDGESHIRE

Late Turf

ENGLISH FILLY’S VICTORY FRENCH HORSES’ BOLD BID United P.A.—By TelegrapTt-—Copyright Reed. 12.25 p.m. LONDON, Wednesday At Newmarket today the big handicap race resulted as follows: CAM BRIDGES HIRE STAKES A Handicap sweepstake of £25 each, i with £I,OOO added; nine furlongs straight. DOUBLE LIFE (Lady Zia Wernher), ch f, by Bachelor’s Double—Saint Joan, Syrs 1 YATOI’T (Captain J. D. Cohn), Syrs 2 PALAIS ROYAL 11. (M. Jacques Wittouck), ch h, by Bruleur—Puntarena, 4yrs 3 Thirty-six started. Won by a neck, with the third horse only a head away. The winner is trained in England, and the second and third horses in France. Thus was the French invasion frustrated once again. A fortnight earlier horses from across the Channel failed to gain a place in the Cesarewiteh Stakes. Palais Royal 11. won the Cambridgeshire last year with 7.13, the winner being favourite. Another French horse, Insight 11., was third. That race was worth £1,750, but. the stake this time would be about £2,000. BOMBARDER’S PACE FAST SIX FURLONGS WITH GOLDEN WEDDING TRAINING AT ELLERSLIE There were several good trials witnessed at Ellerslie this morning. Among the best workers were Bombarder and Golden Wedding, who covered six furlongs in dashing style. Other Whangarei candidates to perform well were Tetrarchate and Measurer,’the former a three-year-old, who figures in the maiden events. The weather was fine, though threatening, for training, and when the course gates were thrown open at 5.20 a.m. there were trainers already on the scenes. Number two grass was in use, and a slight shower earlier made the going excellent and conducive to fast times. King Emerald and Thursby were the first pair out, the latter having a bit the worst of the weights in an essay over a round. King Emerald set a fast pace, and disposed of the first two in 26, three in 38 4-5, and the first half-mile in 51 3-5, then going away from his companion he ran home an easy winner in 1.47. It was a meritorious effort on King Emerald’s part, and indicates that he has a reasonably good chance of success in the Whangarei Gold Cup. an event in which his rider will be E. Ludlow, who piloted him this morning. Looking the picture of fitness, Eager Rose was far from extended to run six furlongs in 1.26; in fact, it was only a modest working gallop. In Fine Order i Sleepy Sol, who had a slight advantage over Kawainga and War Officer when they jumped away at the five-furlong post, was still doing it nicely at the end of the journey in 1.5. Sleepy Sol is in fine trim for new engagements and is carrying himself very jauntily at present. Tambourine and Neil were practically on terms at the end of half a mile in 53 1-5. Red Lion did an easy round at little better than three-quarter pace, and was anxious to go faster. The Solferino gelding has done remarkably well since liis return from Sydney, and if at all reliable he should race prominently at Whangarei. Tetrarchate strode impressively over five furlongs in 7.4. beating Good Idea by several lengths. Tetrarchate would seem to hold a royal show in the maiden at Whangarei, and if he goes along staisfactorily in the interim he will not lack for support. One of the Best

A striking gallop was that of Bombarder’s. the son of Bombita being partnered from the six furlong disc by Golden Wedding. Both went out smartly, and raced all the way with little between them, although at the post Bombarder, on the outside, had a shade the best of it. They cut out the journey in slick time. 1.16 3-5, the last five in 1.4 1-5. Both pleased mightily, and it only remains to be ‘seen whether they will race up to the form in their next appearance. Respirator moved over five furlongs, and returned 42 for the last three, while Brampton and Patutahi disposed of five furlongs in 1.5. Sir Archie and Corinax encompassed a round in 1.46 3-5, and they did it well, especially the latter, who was not unduly bustled. Sir Archie was first out, and maintained his position to the end, but he had to be given a reminder at the business end, and stalled off Corinax by a bare halflength. The first three furlongs took 41, and the half-mile 54 1-5. Hyde Park, Cynthia N., and Standfast were worked separately over a circuit at three-quarter pace. N. Cunningham has them in nice order at present. T. Garmon t had his jumpers, Automne and Mountain Guide, out for a schooling lesson prior to the breakfast interval, but only the former completed the four hurdles safely. Mountain Guide parted company with K. Robinson at tho third obstacle, but it was not entirely unexpected, for he had fenced erratically at the two previous fences. Automne is showing marked improvement in his schooling. After the Interval After the breakfast interval Chesterman (J. Burgess) completed an essay over two schooling hurdles, the first slowly and the second in improved style. Gay Cockade was dispatched over six furlongs, but there was no pace on and he ran home the last five in 1-9

Roman Pearl was seen to advantage when she beat Spring Abbey over half a mile in 51 1-5. Operatic and Good Boy covered a similar distance in 51 2-5, and the former went pleasingly indeed, for he is practically a- newcomer to the game. Good Boy, it is understood, will not make the trip to Whangarei, his connections being adverse from racing their candidate under punishing weights at a minor fixture. Luxurious was showing the way to Master Clements over five furlongs in I. 3-5, and Royal Lover took 41 4-5 for the last three furlongs of the same ground. Measurer’s half-mile in 49 4-5 was a fair indication of how this member of J. Chisholm’s stable is progressing. She was running on at the end, too. and her prospects of securing some money in the near future appear very bright. Adjuster (A. McGregor) schooled satisfactorily over two hurdles. He does not appear a good proposition for hurdle. events just yet, for he is affected with respiratory trouble. CAULFIELD GALLOPS Reed. 1.22 p.m. MELBOURNE. Today. The weather was fine and calm for the trial gallops for the big V.R.C. meeting opening at Flemington next ; Saturday. j At Caulfield, Lady Kentrel beat De- ; most over 10 furlongs on the course
