DIVORCE LAWS

A SUGGESTED AMENDMENT THE SON'S Parliamentary Reporter PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Today. Mr. W. E. Barnard (Napierj was philosophical in introducing the Divorce and Matrimonial Causes Amendment Bill yesterday in the House of Representatives. He explained that the intention was to widen the scope of the present Act so that the provisions covered New Zealand parties to a separation order or decree for judicial separation made in Great Britain and in force for three years. This meant that divorce could be applied for in New Zealand. This might be said to be making New Zealand a second Reno, but it was not really so, as under the main Act the petitioner had to be resident in New Zealand at least two years. Then It was sought to make Insanity a ground for divorce, whether the person concerned were in any other part of the Empire or not. When Mr. Barnard had finished Mr. Speaker asked him when he expected his Bill to be set down for second reading. Mr. Barnard replied with a smile which was taken up by the House. "Oh, a mouth from todav sir."
