ROMAN CATHOLIC LANDS
FLAW IN ACT TO BE RECTIFIED A DELAYED DISCOVERY THE SUN'S Parliamentary Reporter PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Tuesday. Not until a fortnight ago did the Roman Catholic authorities discover that there was a flaw in the Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland Empowering Act of 1924. This flaw lias been found, and a result was the introduction of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland Empowering Bill of 1929 this afternoon by the Minister of Justice, the Hon. T. M. Wilford. He was granted permission by the House to have the Bill proceed through'all stages as a public Bill. When Mr. Wilford moved in this direction Mr. P. Fraser (Wellington Central) asked -why the Bill was not in charge of an Auckland member. Mr. W. Downie Stewart (Dunedin West) asked what was the purpose of the Bill.
Mr. Wilford replied that under the Act of 1924 provision w’as made that the proceeds of the sale of land in any part of the Diocese of Auckland should be expended in the same part of the diocese. Now it was desired that provision be made for the money to be expended anywhere in Auckland. The reason for the delay in bringing the Bill before the House was that a flaw had been discovered only a fortnight ago, and a new Bill had been drafted and rushed down. The Bill was read a first time.
