HANDS AND CHARACTERS
MODERN READINGS VIII.—THE THUMB. The thumb is important in its relation to a person’s character, since it represents the amount of reason and ■will-power possessed by its owner. The longer and better proportioned the thumb, the better the intellectual faculties, the person with a small thumb being governed more by ..the heart and emotions than by the head. Tenacity of purpose, reason, logic, and common sense are. indicated by the large thumb. The thumb consists of two phalanges. The first represents will power, executive abilitj-, and firmness; the second the intellectual or reasoning powers. When placed close to the side of the open hand, a normal thumb should reach about a quarter of an inch below the second joint of the first finger. If it reaches the joint of this finger, it is called long; should it only come within half an inch of the joint, it is short. A normal thumb denotes a nature that is equally balanced between reason and feelings. In such a person, the harder tendencies of reason are modified by the kindness and sympathy of the heart. There is the power to use logic and reason where required, yet in dealing with friends and domestic affairs sympathies and feelings will be allowed to wield their influence. The long thumb suggests an increase of mental ability, capacity for thought and action; it is a sign of a less sympathetic but more practical nature. When it is very long, it shows {little sentiment or feeling, but. a character that is deliberate, positive, hard and obstinate. A short thumb reduces the faculties of reason and logic, its possessors expressing themselves more through the heart. They are sympathetic, but lacking in independence and confidence. When the thumb is very short, the owner is likely to be sw'ayed by every impulse, liable to go to extremes, and capable of breaking promises. The thumb set low down on the hand denotes versatility; if it is set high, a tendency to meanness and selfishness is to be noted.
