WOMEN AND ASIATICS
MAORI COMMITTEE SETS CONDITIONS RULES IN EMPLOYMENT A native committee at Pukekohe has banned, under its rules, the employment of single Maori girls In Chinese or Indian market gardens. Maori women may work in the gardens with their husbands. This Is the edict of the Maori Komiti, Pukekohe, in which Messrs. Piripi Pene and Poharama Paringa are active officers. The committee seeks to obtain improved conditions in the employment of Maoris and it has formulated rules for observance by natives recognising the committee’s judgment. , Recently, the committee announced a scale of payment for market garden labour and it has now decided that Mr. Lenard Albert be a warden to supervise adherence to the payments stipulated. It an employee is dismissed for requesting the payments demanded by Pukekohe's native trade union, the committee will intervene to discuss the question with the employer. The committee is apparently occupied wholly in an effort to bring about recognition of the claims of Maoris to regular methods in employment. So far. it is unique among native organisations.
