RIVAL OF “TOTE”

FINED £5 FOR LAYING BETS ON COURSE ASSISTED BY DAUGHTER “It is very impudent of these women to think they can lay bets right in front of the totalisator,” urged Chief-Detective Hammond, when a woman was fined £5 at the Police Court this morning-for laying tote odds. The chief-detective said that the woman had been seen by detectives on Saturday laying bets, but it was not until she was again seen on Monday paying out that she was arrested by Detective Bowman. Alice Irvine, a married woman, pleaded guilty to laying tote odds on the Junction Handicap at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting yesterday. She had nothing to say. According to the chief detective the woman lived at Ponsonby. She was a silver bettor and had a little girl, her daughter, doing the pencilling for her. Her husband, who was a labourer, was also at the course.

“Can she pay the fine.” asked Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., after imposing the penalty, and the chief detective gave an assurance that there would be no difficulty about that.
