DELAYED EXPRESSES

TOO MANY PASSENGERS The Limited from Wellington last evening arrived in Auckland at 11.50 p.m., 45 minutes after scheduled time. Exceptionally heavy traffic, necessitating the addition of several carriages at Frankton Junction, and crossing delays, were responsible. There were 12 carriages on the train, and 350 passengers for Auckland. The second express, leaving Auckland at 7.40 p.m., carried 10 extra carriages, making a total of 20. About 40 people were left behind, as the railway regulations, which fix 20 carriages as the limit, would not permit extra carriages being put on. Ascending the Whangarata Hill, approaching Tuakau station, the train was signalled to stop, but when the signal was dropped the train was unable to start, owing to the heavy load. Before it could move it slipped about a chain down the hill. It was about half an hour late in arriving at Mercer.
