KEEN SPORT AT EPSOM Auckland Club’s Fine Fixture
could be found with the sport provided, by the Auckland Trotting Club at Alexandra Park yesterday, when the spring carnival reached finality. Many thrilling contests were witnessed and the climax was reached when three horses Hashed past the post in the final event, the judge alone being able to tell which had won
* 1 * 1 - LV I < 1 1 VV 111 (; 1 Despite heavy rain in the early jnorning, the weather proved fine when v large crowd collected at the racing rendezvous. The track was in good order, although the footing was holding. That the public was in betting form was evidenced by the increase on the machine, which handled £ 43,233 for the day. against £37,583 at the concluding day last year. The figures for the meeting reached £78,788, compared with 4-73,430 tor 1925, an increase of £5,358. Clean Sport As usual the management left nothing to be desired, and every official connected with the 'function worked 1 with energy and efficiency with a view J to success. In his position as host, the president, Mr. John Rowe, was I not larking in hospitality, while the I secretarial duties were carried out in I their entirety and to the highest doI gree of capability by Mr. A. G. I Mabee. The stipendiary stewards, Messrs. R. [ T. Reid and A. K. Commons, again kept l a strict watch over the proceedings, 1 and except for a few minor incidents, j their duties were not laborious. The 1 sport generally was conducted with a cleanness that mad© it enjoyable for all concerned, and was greatly appreciated by the public. The racing was in all respects well up to the high-water mark usually associated with Alexandra Park fixtures, and the handicapper, Mr. Geo. Paul, could not be other than gratified with the keenness, and at times, closeness, of the finishes. Apart from Wrackler’s brilliant victory in the principal event, Rockburn was the star performer, capturing a double for his genial owner, Mr. D. Brideson. The aged gelding was turned out in good order by S. M. August, who drove him with fine judgment. A Popular Win A popular win was that of Linnett the Great, who recently arrived from England with F. J. Smith, who proved himself a skilful reinsman, by the ; judicious manner in which he handled McGregor the Great’s handsome j daughter. Belle Axworthy won the Newmarket Handicap in good style, ‘ showing ;t rare turn of speed over the final stages, while Peter Pirate further emphasised his ability to stay by scoring cleverly in the Remuera Handicap. Nelson Tasker was seen at his best in the classy ten-furlong heat, in which ho received every assistance from his driver, Sid Groat, and Peter McKinney followed up his first day success by capturing the big trot after u good set-to with Etta Cole. A review of the racing, together jtirith the results, is appended. On New Zealand Soil
Excellently handled by the English reinsman, F. J. Smith, Linnett the Great won her first race on New Zealand soil when she got home in the Green Lane Trot. Tamahine, £779, was elect, with the winner carrying £544. Eva Rota broke at the start, and Ando Spray led past the stands from Tamahine, Golden Gate and Direct Action, who was breaking. When they reached the stand again, the favourite was in front from Linnett the Great, Direct Action, Paradigm (breaking), and Peterson. Along the back Peterson moved up handy, and when they turned for homo the order was Tamahine. Linnett the Great, Peterson, with Paradigm at tlie head of the others. A great race ensued to the I box, the English mare winning by a long head from Peterson, with Tamal hine a head away third. Paradigm was eight lengths away fourth, followed by Direct Action and Golden Gate. The winner was on Saturday evening purchased by McKendrick Brothers, of Auckland. A Good Effort Belle Axworthy £1,070, and Queen Elizabeth £1,034, were favourites- for the Newmarket Handicap, and the latter was first to show out, with llohora, Warspite, Bello Axworthy and
Ngahuia. With a circuit covered Hohora and Queen Elizabeth were together, in front of Ngalniia, Warspite (who broke badly), Belle Axworthy and Great Ballin. Along the back Belle Axworthy moved up on the outside, and was handy to Queen Elizabeth and Hohora. with Master Huia also showing up in the picture. At the home turn Queen Elizabeth liad a slight call over the favourite, with | Master Huia and Hohora also handy. In the run to the post Belle Axworthy finished well to win nicely by a length and a-half from Queen Elizabeth, with Master Huia two lengths away third. Then followed Nella Dillon, Hohora, Pur Nancy and Great Ballin. Rockburn’s Fine Dash Sunshower was the best backed with £1,772. with Hal Chimes (£878) and Evelyn Locanda (£734) next. Rockburn carried £607. Warplane at once wont to the front, followed by Lord Nepean. Sunshower and Hal Chimes. Going along the back the second time Warplane still held the lead with Sunshower. L,ord Nepean. Hal Chimes, Concertina. Evelvn Locanda, Rockburn and Explosion next. Passing the stand the second time the order was Hal Chimes. Sunshower, Evelyn Locanda, Explosion, Warplane and Rockburn. There was very little between the field. Going down the back for the last time Hal Chimes broke and interfered with Explosion. Crossing the top Rockburn I came up with a great run on the outside and was the first to turn for home, with Sunshower, Warplane and ConBE AN OPTIMIST Nobody has any excuse for being ©ut-of-sorts and glum—always looking on the wrong side of life. • certina next. Rockburn came away in tho straight to win fairly easily from j Sunshower, with Explosion half a length away third. Next came Concer- | tina, Evelyn Locanda and Warplane. Peter McKinney Again i Tiger Salve, with £1,038 entrusted to j him, was the favourite, and Raima, £965, and the Peter McKinney-Bingen j Starr bracket £943, were tho next best fancied. Etta Cole showed out j at the start from Gold Sovereign and j Bingen Starr. Passing the stand the I first time Etta Cole was in command ! from Gold Sovereign. Bingen Starr, i Peter McKinney, Tradesman, Raima, and The Tartar. Going round tho back the order was little changed. Passing the stand again the order was tho same, but the back markers had made up a lot of leeway. Etta Cole was still doing nicely down the back for the last time, leading from Gold Sovereign, Peter McKinney, Tradesman. Bingen Starr and Raima. Peter McKinney came through in the straight to win by half a length from Etta Cole. Three lengths away was Tradesman. with Raima, Tiger Salve and Sister Beatrice next. Nelson Tasker Scores Sunfish, with £940 to his credit, was the popular choice, and the winner, Nelson Tasker, carried £754. Stanmoor carried £690. The Abbey refused to go away and Oakhampton took the lead early, with Gold Dial and Goldman following close. Parsing the stand Oakhampton, Sunfish, All Bell, Dillon Huon, Gold Dial, Goldman and Stanmoor was the order. Going along tho back Sunfish, Dillon Tluon, Oakhampton, Stanmoor, Joybird and Nelson Tasker were prominent. In a good race to the post Nelson Tasker got up to win from Dillon Huon by two lengths, with Stanmoor
a neck away third. Following the placed horses were Torpedo lluon, Sunfish, Joybird and Oakhampton. Goldman broke up crossing the top, and Carmel colliding, J. Shaw was tipped out of the sulky. Peter Pirate’s Good Price Enawali, the best backed, carried £1,136, Jackie Logan £957, and the winner £541. Polly’s Picture failed to settle down and when the field had gone a furlong Warspite, Sailor Boy, Ena wall and Kelp were in the lead. Passing the stand the order was Warspite, Ena.wall, Sailor Boy, Lady Barrington, Rolfe Audubon, anil Jackie Logan. There was little change going along the back. At the stand Limosa was out in front from Enawah, Lady Barrington, Jackie Logan, Peter Pirate, llohora and Warspite. Going down tho back Enawah and Limosa were together with Lady Barrington, Jackie Logan and Peter Pirate close up. The same order was maintained into the straight, Limosa being a length ahead of Enawah, Jackie Logan Lady Barrington and Peter Pirate. Peter Pirate came through with a fast run to win by one and a-half lengths from Limosa, Jackie Logan being three lengths away. Lady Barrington. Enawali and Kelp were the next to finish. Rockburn Makes It Two Sunshower was favourite with £975 and Mountain Dell next with £923, and Rockburn £722. Florent opened up a big gap on Lord Nepean, Van Rich and Mountain Dell in the early stages. Passing the stand the same order was maintained. Going down the back Van Rich moved into second place, followed by Lord Nepean, Mountain Dell, while Rockburn could be noticed coming up fast on the outside. Florent turned for home first followed by Hal Chimes, Rockburn and Van Rich. In a desperate finish, in which three horses crossed the line almost abreast, Rockburn got the victory by a. nose, the same distance separating Hal Chimes and Florent., Then came Great Delight, Sunshower and Van Rich.

Wrackler Again in the Picture A BRILLIANT EFFORT ALEXANDRA HANDICAP WIN That there was no fluke about his victory on Saturday was clearly demonstrated by Wrackler in the Alexandra Handicap yesterday, when after waiting on the field in the straight, the four-year-old beat the opposition to the post pointless. Tho son of Wrack began with more alertness than in the Spring Handicap the first day, and when Jean McElwyn, who quickly went to the front, reached the half-mile disc in 1.12, Morry Holmes was not many lengths away with the favourite, who was then in fourth position. There was no change in the leadership as the mile was left behind in 2.22, and with the 12 - furlong flag .arrived at in 3.33
Wrackler was handy to Jean McElwyn. Once the straight turn was negotiated the favourite came forward with Linkman hanging on determinedly, but in the final furlong the Wrack gelding asserted his superiority to win splendidly and gain the well-deserved plaudits of the large crowd, of keenly interested spectators. Mr. Nicoll’s fine pacer ran his final half mile in 1.5. How They Ran Wrackler £1,702 was a better favourite than Linkman £1.340. with good support for Jean McElwyn £ 1,267. When the signal was given The Abbey turned round, refused to go either way, and took no part in the race. Native Prince also left his feet and soon tailed the field. Jean McElwyn went to the front with Great Delight and Gold Dial. When they came to the stand this trio was attended by Wrackler, Torpedo Huon and Linkman, the field racing in close formation. The order was much the same going round the back. Passing the stand for the second time Jean McElwyn was still making play, with Great Delight, Torpedo Huon and Gold Dial together with Wrackler and Linkman next, not less than six lengths covering the field. Crossing the top Wrackler made a forward move and just as they turned for home was just behind Jean McElwyn. with Torpedo Huon and Linkman also prominent. Wrackler came up in the closing stages to win by a length and a-half. Two lengths separated Linkman and Torpedo Huon and Gold Dial, Jean McElwyn and Great Delight followed in that order.
