TRAMPING AND CLIMBING
CLUB’S WEEK-END TRIP TONGARIRO VISITED A pleasant week-end, but one marred to some extent by capricious weather, was spent by 16 members of the Auckland Tramping Club who journeyed to Tongariro National Park on Friday evening, and returned to the City this morning. It was S o'clock on Saturday morning when the party reached their destination, at the Manga-te-popo huts, laden with their heavy packs of food, cooking apparatus and clothing changes. On the same day they climbed to the various craters and found the Red Crater showing signs of unusual activity; later they reached the top of the mountain and glissaded SOO feet back to the Southern Crater. They also visited the Blue Lake. From the top of the mountain the view was excellent, but on Sunday they were prevented from undertaking the big climb of Ngarualioe, and'had to be content with an alternative trip embracing the Ketetahi Blow-hole, with its geysers and hot springs. Snow, sleet and hail made the return journey difficult, but at 10 o’clock in the evening the club members returned to their huts. Monday saw them embarked on the Pukekaikiori rock climb, where they looked in at the extinct crater, and enjoyed another long glissade on the Ruapehu side.
