ON GOVERNMENT WORK
MORE THAN 64,000 EMPLOYED 15,000 ON RELIEF (Special to TUB SUN) WELLINGTON, Thursday. More than 64,000 persons are employed by the Government, according to information obtained here today. Of this number, 42,198 are permanent employees and 22,000 are casuals. Approximately 15,000 to 16,000 of these latter are engaged on public works or relief works of some description. This is unusual and is due to the special effort made by the Government to find work for the unemployed. The permanent employees are distributed among the departments as follow:—Railways, 13,368; education, 9,653; post and telegraph, 8,565; pub11c service, 7,746; police, 1,114; navy, 1,106; military, 506; others, 140. Three of the departments, Railways, Post and Telegraph and Education, account for more than three-quarters of the total.
